Swan on Copenhagen's lakes

This Is The Inspiration Behind My Copenhagen Print

Can You Recognize This Copenhagen Landmark?

I moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, six years ago, settling in the residential neighborhood of Østerbro just a few minutes from the Lakes. Known locally as "Søerne," the Lakes are a series of three rectangular bodies of water—Sankt Jørgens Sø, Peblinge Sø, and Sortedams Sø—that gently curve around the western edge of Copenhagen's city center. They are among the city’s oldest and most distinctive features, offering a serene retreat amidst urban life.

The Lakes: A Local’s Favorite Spot

The Lakes have a special place in the hearts of locals. The paths surrounding them are perfect for leisurely walks, peaceful runs, and cycling. It’s also common to see people sipping coffee at nearby cafes, enjoying a quiet date, or simply watching the graceful swans glide across the water. The area exudes a calm and cozy vibe, making it a beloved escape from the city's busy streets.

Capturing the Tranquil Charm

In my latest illustration, I wanted to capture the tranquil, everyday charm of this area. The drawing features a cat cycling in the foreground while friends stand by the water, admiring the swans. To highlight the vibrant energy I feel at the Lakes, I chose to make the houses more colorful than they actually are. This artistic choice has even led some viewers to mistake the location for Nyhavn, with its famous colorful townhouses.

The Lakes vs. Nyhavn: Two Iconic Experiences

While both the Lakes and Nyhavn are iconic parts of Copenhagen, they offer very different vibes. Nyhavn is lively and bustling, with brightly painted 17th-century townhouses, restaurants, and bars. The Lakes, on the other hand, provide a more peaceful setting—a place to slow down and connect with nature while still in the heart of the city. Both are beautiful, but the Lakes feel like a hidden gem known best by locals.

A Poster to Celebrate Copenhagen Through Local Eyes

The Lakes aren’t often featured in touristic posters, so I wanted to create something that showcases Copenhagen through the lens of the locals. This print celebrates the charm of the Lakes and invites viewers to experience a quieter, more authentic side of the city.

The poster is now available for sale as a giclée print on thick 200 gsm enhanced matte paper, perfect for adding a touch of Copenhagen’s charm to your space.

What do you think? Will you visit the Lakes on your next trip?
